How to playComo jogar

You have noclipped out of reality into the Backrooms. Find the exit on each of eleven levels before your sanity runs out. New here? Try the tutorial in the main menu. Every step costs a little sanity. Monsters cost a lot. Your progress is saved at the start of every level.

Everything is spoken and played as sound. Headphones help: sounds come from the left or right to show where things are.

Moving

  • Forward, left, right, back: walk. Add a number, like “forward three”, to keep walking.
  • Turn left, turn right, turn around: turn in place.
  • Sprint (or “sprint left”): run two rooms at once. Needs energy bars, and it is loud.
  • Sneak: move quietly so monsters only notice you up close. Say walk normally to stop.

Surviving

  • Listen: hear which way the exit is.
  • Look: describe where you are.
  • Hide: hold your breath and hope it walks past. When you reach a locker, desk, vent or closet, hide climbs inside, and nothing can find you unless it gets lucky. Move to climb out.
  • Drink: almond water restores sanity.
  • Light: flashlight on or off. Smilers hate light. Deathmoths love it. Batteries run out.
  • Throw (or “throw left”): throw a firecracker. Monsters chase the bang.
  • Use: flip a breaker, pull a lever or ring a bell on puzzle levels. Go from the lowest sound to the highest.
  • Talk: speak to a Faceling when one is next to you.
  • Radio: the walkie-talkie static gets stronger near the exit.
  • Tape: replay the last tape you found.
  • Mark: scratch a mark where you stand. Find mark: hear the way back to it.
  • Status, repeat, help. Pause opens the pause menu, where you can resume, restart the level, or quit to main menu.

Endless mode

Random Backrooms levels that never end. Each level is bigger and more crowded than the last. How deep can you go?

Keyboard

X mark, C find mark. Arrows walk. Shift plus left or right arrow turns. Shift plus up arrow sprints. L listen, K look, B hide, D drink, F flashlight, T throw, N sneak, G talk, O radio, P tape, S status, R repeat, H help, M microphone, Escape pauses and resumes.

Experimente o tutorial no menu principal.

As pilhas acabam.

Teclado

X marcar, C achar marca. Setas andam. Shift com seta esquerda ou direita gira. Shift com seta para cima corre. L escutar, K olhar, B esconder, D beber, F lanterna, T bombinha, N agachar, G falar, O rádio, P fita, S status, R repetir, H ajuda, M microfone, Esc pausa e retoma.

What's newNovidades

Version 1.3: Visual mode

  • New: Visual mode, for players who want to see the game instead of listening to it. Choose "I want to see the game" on the first screen, or Visual mode in Settings under Narration.
  • The narrator stays quiet and the story shows under the picture. Swipe the picture to turn and walk. The Listen button is gone: follow the gold path and the map.
  • Visual puzzles: door code numbers are scrawled on the walls (some only show with your flashlight), switches have scratch marks that tell you the order, and the drain valve flashes colored lights you have to repeat on a keypad of colors. The exit door has a real keypad.
  • Scarier for everyone who looks at the screen: the edges of the picture bleed red when something is close, the lights flicker, monsters twitch when they are near you, and sometimes something stands at the end of the hallway. Sometimes.
  • The gold path now leads to what you need next, like the keycard, a switch or a code number, before it leads to the exit.
  • Nothing changes for VoiceOver or spoken narration.

Version 1.2: easier to find your way

  • For players who look at the screen: movement buttons that lead into a wall are now dimmed, so you can see which ways are open.
  • A small map in the corner of the screen draws the hallways you have walked, with a gold path to the exit (the red dot). Monsters are never on the map. Good luck.
  • The movement button that leads toward the exit has a gold border and a star, and the gold box at the top tells you the way and how many steps are left.
  • Screen reader players already hear all of this, so nothing changes for VoiceOver.

Version 1.1: Night Watch (Beta)

  • Fixed: the music kept playing after you left the app, even from the home screen, and drained the battery. Now all sound pauses when you leave and picks up where it was when you come back.
  • New mode, Night Watch: you are locked in a security office deep in the Backrooms. Survive six nights.
  • Night Watch is a beta: an early experiment that may change a lot or be removed. Use Send feedback in Night Watch to tell us if it fits Accessible Backrooms.
  • With a screen reader, time in Night Watch only passes when you act, and the tape waits for you to start the night.
  • Turn-based like the rest of the game: the monsters move after each thing you do, so you always have time to think. If you stay idle, time passes on its own, longer on Easy.
  • Six cameras that tell you what they show, Listen to hear everything around you, and the left door, the right door and the vent to keep things out. Watch your power.
  • The flashlight scares off the silent Smiler, but the light draws everything else to you.
  • Dana, the guard before you, left a tape for every night, and each night has its own horror music. When the power dies, only a music box plays.

Version 1.0: on the App Store

  • Accessible Backrooms is now a real iPhone app on the App Store.
  • iCloud backup is on: your progress, skills, bestiary, journal and settings follow you to a new phone.
  • Thank you for playing. Tell us what scared you most!

Version 0.24: every voice, every picture

  • All the voices are now real recorded voices, in English and Portuguese: all eight of Marcus's tapes, Marcus calling you, the voices that try to lure you, the family voices, the radio, and the whispers.
  • Every level, extra level and creature now has a picture for sighted players, with a full description. Say describe in a level to hear its picture. The bestiary shows each creature's portrait, and the main menu has title art.
  • Fixed: the Howler was missing from the bestiary.

Version 0.23.7: ghost tap fix

  • Fixed: tapping Enter on the first screen could also press the menu button that appeared under your finger, like Endless mode or Extra levels. Taps right after a new screen opens are now ignored for a moment.

Version 0.23.6: voice command fix

  • Fixed: with voice commands on, the microphone could hear the narration or VoiceOver reading a button, and press it by itself, like opening Play right after you enter. The game now ignores words it hears from its own narration and from VoiceOver.

Version 0.23.5: Marcus speaks

  • Marcus now has a real recorded voice on six of his eight tapes, and on one of the calls you hear while you look for him. The rest still use your device voice for now.

Version 0.23.4: the first real voice

  • The first recorded voice line: when your sanity drops, one of the whispers in your ear is now a real whispering voice. More voices are coming.

Version 0.23.3: more pictures

  • New artwork for Levels 6, 7 and 8, with descriptions. Say describe to hear them.

Version 0.23.2: more pictures

  • New artwork for Levels 3, 4 and 5, with descriptions. Say describe to hear them.

Version 0.23.1: bug fixes

  • On small phones, the game screen buttons no longer stick out past the edge of the screen.

Version 0.23: scarier

  • The Librarian now sometimes stops shushing to listen. When the shushing stops, freeze. If you move before it starts again, it hears you and comes fast. And you can finally hear its shush properly.
  • Partygoers hum happy birthday, slightly wrong, while they chase you. If one catches you, it sings.
  • Hounds hunt in packs. When one howls, the others answer from different directions and close in.
  • Smilers giggle right next to you in the dark.
  • New jumpscares and screams, and the monster that catches you changes what you hear.

Version 0.22: events

  • Four new random events, on top of the blackouts. A telephone rings somewhere: reach it in time and a voice tells you the way out. A stampede rushes past and pulls the monsters away. Gas leaks from a vent, so sprint out of it. And doors start slamming, closer and closer: hide or sneak before something enormous comes through.
  • Halloween, from October 24 to November 1: candy hidden in every level, and trick-or-treaters knocking in the halls. Some give you treats. Some are not kids.
  • And on one special day in October, there is a surprise. Two secret achievements to find.

Version 0.21.1: puzzle shortcuts

  • In the Electrical Station, the Carnival and the Silent Library, solving the puzzle now opens a secret shortcut that drops you a few steps from the exit, so you do not have to walk all the way back.

Version 0.21: pictures

  • Levels now have real artwork. It fades in over the view when a level starts, so sighted friends can see where you are.
  • Every picture has a description. VoiceOver reads it, and you can say describe at any time to hear what the picture of your level shows.
  • The first pictures are Levels 0, 1 and 2. More levels, and monster portraits for the bestiary, arrive a few at a time.

Version 0.20.2: Nightmare door codes

  • On Nightmare and in Hardcore, the game no longer reminds you of the door code. Remember the numbers, or check your status.

Version 0.20.1: easier door codes

  • The keypad understands codes said in lots of ways: code 4 7 2, code four seventy two, enter the code 4 7 2, or just the three numbers when you are standing at the door.
  • The keypad and listen now tell you which numbers you have found so far, and repeat the full code once you have all three.

Version 0.20: five new handmade levels

  • Level 18, The School Halls: never run, and watch out when the bell rings.
  • Level 19, The Dead Mall: the Mannequins freeze in your flashlight beam, so bring batteries.
  • Level 20, The Last Train: the Rail Crawlers hunt by sound, but they cannot hear you while a train roars past.
  • Level 21, Motion: a cheerful cartoon world where the Toons can stretch their arms two rooms.
  • Level 22, The Server Farm: the Glitch skips toward you and eats your flashlight batteries.
  • Each level has its own music, sounds, hiding spots, achievement and bestiary entry. Extra levels you make by hand now go to 22, and the random ones start after that.

Version 0.19: iCloud backup

  • On iPhone, your progress, skills, bestiary, journal and settings back up to your own iCloud automatically. Get a new phone, install the game, and your save comes back.
  • Settings has Back up to iCloud now and Restore from iCloud buttons. The website version keeps saving on your device like before.

Version 0.18: skills and the Trader

  • Skills: after Levels 2, 5, 8 and 11, choose one of two skills, like Keen ears, Quiet feet, Thick skin, Lock picking or Pathfinder. Some you earn: survive three Hound attacks to learn Hound sense, and hide five times to learn Shadow. Say skills to hear yours.
  • The Trader: sometimes a wanderer with a bag of supplies shows up. Talk to them, then say trade and a number. Almond water is the money.
  • Moth Jelly: a big sanity boost, but the moths love the smell.
  • Cashew Water: for ten moves, you hear exactly where every monster is.
  • Wind chime: hang it in a room, and it rings when a monster walks through.
  • Disposable camera: the flash freezes every monster close to you for a few moves.

Version 0.17: six new survival items

  • Firesalt: throw it into a hall, and it bursts into fire that monsters cannot walk through for a while.
  • Glow sticks: drop one, and that room stays lit for good. Smilers will not go near it.
  • Old compass: for ten steps, it tells you the way to the exit after every move.
  • Adrenaline shot: if something grabs you in the next few moves, you shove it off without getting hurt.
  • Mystery bottle: a big boost, or Liquid Pain. Drink it if you dare.
  • Strange pill: very rare. Swallow it to fall straight through to the next level, but it costs sanity.
  • Item buttons only show up when you have that item, so there are fewer buttons to go through.

Version 0.16: jukebox

  • A jukebox in the main menu. Every song in the game unlocks as you reach its level, with where it plays and who made it. Say track and a number, next, or stop.
  • It also has the background sounds of every level you have reached, on their own. The Lobby's buzzing lights, the office phones, the ocean.

Version 0.15: footsteps

  • Monsters now have footsteps. You hear them walking toward you, from the direction they are coming, and every monster sounds different: claws, heavy thuds, dragging, squeaky shoes, sharp heels.
  • Your own footsteps are louder and clearer.
  • Bestiary: every creature you meet is added, with how to survive it and a button to hear its sound safely. Find it in the main menu, or say bestiary.
  • New achievement: meet every creature.

Version 0.14: new places and a daily challenge

  • Three handmade extra levels after the story: Level 15, the Hospital, with the Patients on squeaking gurneys. Level 16, the Endless Hotel, where the Bellhop offers you room service. Level 17, the Frozen Field, where every step crunches in the snow and the Frostbitten follow your trail.
  • Daily challenge: a new maze every day, the same for everyone, with a twist like lights out or twice the monsters. Keep a streak going. Fewer steps is better.
  • Fixed: a music box still playing when you left a level could break the next level.
  • Five new achievements.

Version 0.13: locks, tunes and the Host

  • The Abandoned Office exit has a keypad. Find three numbers written on scraps of paper, then say code and the numbers, or press Enter code. A wrong code sets off an alarm.
  • The Poolrooms drain is shut by a singing valve. It plays a tune, and you repeat it: low, middle or high.
  • A boss: the Host lives in the Frontrooms. It always knows where you are and never stops coming. Flares scare it off, bear traps hold it, and music boxes lead it away. There are extra supplies in the house to help you.
  • New achievement: escape the Frontrooms without the Host ever catching you.

Version 0.12: you are not alone

  • Survivors: from Level 2 on, you may meet another lost person. Talk to them, and they give you supplies and tell you the way out.
  • But some of them are not people. A fake survivor repeats its words, and if you listen closely, it does not breathe. Talk to one of those, and it attacks.
  • Journal: every story level hides a handwritten note from someone who was lost before you. Collect all fifteen. Read them any time from the Journal in the main menu.
  • Two new achievements.

Version 0.11: play your way

  • Narrator voice volume in Settings, and the music now gets quieter while the narrator speaks, so you never miss a word. You can turn that off.
  • Custom voice words: in Settings, give any command your own word. Say it or type it.
  • Hardcore mode: one life. Lose your mind and the run is over. Choose it when you start a new game.
  • New Game Plus: after the ending, play the story again with the items you finished with, against more monsters that hunt harder.
  • Two new achievements.

Version 0.10.2: sound fix for spoken narration

  • Fixed: in Safari on iPhone, spoken narration could stop the music. The game now tells the iPhone it plays sound, and brings the music back right after the voice speaks.

Version 0.10.1: sound fix

  • Fixed: on iPhone, turning on voice commands could stop all the music and sound. The sound now comes back by itself, and the microphone restarts more gently.

Version 0.10: new items

  • Royal Rations: say eat to get sanity back and one more sprint.
  • Flares: say flare to light up the dark around you and drive Smilers away.
  • Bear traps: say set trap. The next monster to step there is stuck for a while.
  • Wind-up music boxes: say music box. It plays a little tune for a long time, and monsters go to it instead of you.
  • Story so far now shows the last five messages, newest first, and VoiceOver can read it. Say history to hear them again.
  • New achievement: catch a monster in a bear trap.

Version 0.9.1: more music

  • Every story level now has its own music. New tracks for the Abandoned Office and the Suburbs.
  • The extra levels have their own set of four new tracks.

Version 0.9: puzzles

  • Puzzles! In the Electrical Station, the Carnival and the Silent Library, the exit is sealed. Find three breakers, bells or levers, and use them from the lowest sound to the highest. Get the order wrong and an alarm calls every monster to you. Say use, or press the Use button.
  • Standing still is never safe anymore. If you wait, the nearest monster slowly comes for you, even from far away.
  • Sanity drains slower in the dark, while sneaking, and the flashlight battery lasts longer.
  • Fixed: going to the menu while falling to the next level could pull you back into the game.
  • Fixed: extra levels in the Poolrooms let monsters ignore you.
  • Fixed: saying use voice commands opened the help.

Version 0.8: no more gaps, and the Backrooms keep going

  • The story levels are numbered 0 to 14 with no gaps. Every level tells you where you are, like Level 5 of 14.
  • Extra levels: finish the story and the count keeps going. Level 15, 16, 17, as deep as you dare. Each one is bigger and has more monsters. Your deepest level is saved.
  • Two new achievements: reach Level 20 and Level 50.

Version 0.7: in order

  • The levels are now in order. The numbers only go up: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 37, then Fun, the Carnival, Level 283 and the way home.
  • Every level now tells you which chapter it is, like chapter 6 of 15.
  • The story links between the levels are rewritten to match, and Marcus's tapes are numbered in the order you find them.
  • New app icon.
  • If you were in the middle of the story, you continue from the first level you have not played yet.

Version 0.6.2: getting ready for iPhone

  • Voice commands and vibration now work inside the iPhone app.
  • Your phone vibrates on jump scares, live wires, walls and heartbeats.
  • Fixed: the sound of walking into a wall never played.

Version 0.6.1: new menu music

  • The main menu now plays The Dread, picked by the players. No more buzzing lights or screams on the menu.
  • The Frontrooms has new music: Unnatural Situation.

Version 0.6: the way home

  • The story now has 15 levels and a real ending. Can you find your way home?
  • Level 11, the Endless City, with the Wretches: if one spots you, it shrieks for the others.
  • Level 283, the Silent Library, with the Librarian: it is blind, but it hears every step. Sneak.
  • Level Carnival, with the Jester: it does not walk, it just appears.
  • The Frontrooms: your own house, and the Mimic, who calls you in a voice you know.
  • 3D graphics. Switch between 3D and classic in Settings.
  • Level select: replay any chapter you have reached. Tapes you find are now kept forever.
  • Three new achievements.

Version 0.5.1: louder firecrackers

  • Firecrackers bang harder, and the noise lasts longer, so monsters chase it from farther away.
  • You hear the monster rush toward the bang, so you know it worked.
  • If there is a wall ahead, the firecracker goes down an open path instead.

Version 0.5: the hide and seek update

  • A tutorial that teaches every command, one at a time. It plays the first time you start a new game, and it is in the main menu.
  • Hiding spots: lockers, desks, vents and closets. Climb in and hold still while something sniffs right outside.
  • Level 4, the Abandoned Office, with the Clump: slow, but it fills the whole corridor.
  • Level 9, the Suburbs, with the Window Watchers: they only move when you are not listening.
  • Try again and Main menu buttons when you lose your mind.
  • Four new achievements.

Version 0.4: the endless update

  • 3D sound: with headphones, you hear things in front of you, behind you, above you in the vents and below you in the water.
  • Endless mode: random levels that never end. How deep can you go?
  • Two new levels: the Electrical Station, with live wires, and Thalassophobia, where something lives in the water.
  • Two new tapes, eight in all. Find every tape for a secret ending.
  • Markers: leave a mark and find your way back to it.
  • Achievements.

Version 0.3: the big update

  • Main menu with its own music, a pause menu, settings, how to play, and credits.
  • Seven levels: the Lobby, the Habitable Zone, Pipe Dreams, the Poolrooms, Level Fun, Lights Out, and Run For Your Life.
  • New monsters: Smilers, Hounds, the voice-copying Skin-Stealer, Partygoers, Deathmoths, and something enormous. Friendly Facelings give hints.
  • New items: flashlight and batteries, firecrackers, walkie-talkie, keycard, energy bars, and six lost tapes.
  • Sprint, sneak, hide and talk. Easy, Normal and Nightmare difficulty. Checkpoints at every level.
  • The whole game in Portuguese, including voice commands.

Version 0.2: the scary update

  • Real recorded monster sounds and horror music.
  • Jump scares, blackouts, footsteps that copy yours, and whispers.
  • Choose between voice commands or buttons.

Version 0.1: the first version

  • Three levels of the Backrooms, played completely by sound.
  • Voice commands, spoken narration, and screen reader support.

Versão 0.24: todas as vozes, todas as imagens

Versão 0.23.7: correção do toque fantasma

O resto ainda usa a voz do aparelho.

Versão 0.19: backup no iCloud

  • Nova conquista: encontrar todas as criaturas.

Enlouqueça e a partida acaba.
  • Duas novas conquistas.

Versão 0.10.2: correção de som com narração falada

  • Corrigido: no Safari do iPhone, a narração falada podia parar a música.

  • Níveis extras: termine a história e a contagem continua.

  • Novo ícone do app.

Versão 0.6.1: nova música no menu

  • O menu principal agora toca The Dread, escolhida pelos jogadores.

Versão 0.5: a atualização do esconde-esconde

  • Quatro conquistas novas.

Versão 0.4: a atualização infinita

  • Duas fitas novas, oito no total.
  • Conquistas.

Versão 0.3: a grande atualização

  • Sete níveis: o Lobby, a Zona Habitável, Sonhos de Canos, as Piscinas, o Nível Diversão, Luzes Apagadas e Corra Pela Sua Vida.
  • Correr, agachar, esconder e falar.

Versão 0.2: a atualização assustadora

Versão 0.1: a primeira versão
